As Israel prepares to launch an offensive on Rafah, the city in southern Gaza that is teeming with Palestinian refugees, the country is coming under increasing pressure from the international community.
David Cameron, the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, stated that "over half of Gaza's population are sheltering in the area," while Hanke Bruins Slot, the Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, stated that there could be "many civilian casualties."
If Rafah were to be overrun, Saudi Arabia threatened to take "very serious repercussions" into account.
This might result in "tens of thousands" of casualties, according to the leaders of Hamas in Gaza.
After Hamas terrorists were responsible for the deaths of over 1,200 people in southern Israel on October 7th, Israel began its operations in the Palestinian enclave.
Since that time, the health ministry in Gaza, which is governed by Hamas, has reported that more than 27,900 people have been killed and at least 67,000 more have been injured.
After been compelled to flee their homes in other parts of Gaza at least once, a significant number of Gazans have found themselves in Rafah.
Warnings were issued on Saturday, one day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave orders to his forces to get ready to remove residents from the city in preparation for an expanded attack against Hamas.
It is impossible to fulfill the objective of the war without destroying Hamas, and it is also impossible to do it while leaving four Hamas battalions in Rafah. "It is abundantly clear that civilians must evacuate the areas of combat in Rafah due to the intense activity that is taking place there," the office of Mr. Netanyahu stated.
The prime minister also did not accept the most recent ceasefire terms that were provided by Hamas.
As part of its attack on Gaza, the United States has previously warned Israel that an invasion of Rafah would be a "disaster." Meanwhile, the European Union and the United Nations have both expressed their own concerns about the situation.
There is no way to evacuate all of the people from the city that is located on the border with Egypt, according to aid organizations.
Within Rafah, there are around 1.5 million Palestinians who are estimated to be seeking refuge from Israeli military operations that are taking place in the remainder of the Gaza Strip. They are residing in tents for the most part.
Mr. Cameron expressed his "deeply concerned" sentiments over the possibility of a military offensive in Rafah in a post that he made on social media.
"The priority must be an immediate pause in the fighting to get aid in and hostages out, then progress towards a sustainable, permanent ceasefire."
During this time, Ms. Bruins Slot referred to the situation in Rafah as "very worrying."
A significant number of Gaza's population have evacuated south. It is difficult to imagine possible scenarios in which large-scale military operations in such a densely populated region would not result in a significant number of civilian casualties and a more severe humanitarian crisis. She went on to say that this was not justifiable.
Additionally, on Saturday, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a statement in which it issued a warning against "targeting the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, which is the last resort for hundreds of thousands of civilians forced to flee as a result of the brutal Israeli aggression."
The ministry has reiterated its "demand for an immediate ceasefire" in recent statements.
